Loading, failure and the states nobody designs

Lesson 9 of 11 in AI for interface design.

Empty States in Application Design: 3 Guidelines · NNgroup
Error Messages 101 · NNgroup
Lesson

Every interface has four states and most designs contain one. Full of ideal content, which is what gets generated and presented. Empty, loading and broken are the other three, and users spend more time in them than anybody plans for.

Four frames in a row. The first is full of a rich still life. The second is empty except for a small arrow pointing in. The third holds a half-finished outline beside an hourglass. The fourth has cracked glass with a small repair kit hanging from it.
Full, empty, waiting, broken. People spend more time in the last three than anyone plans for.
