Data as the input to a visual system

Lesson 6 of 10 in Generative design.

Lesson

Feeding real data into a generative system produces work that is about something, which is the difference between generative design and decoration. A weather-driven identity, a set of covers generated from the contents, a pattern whose density comes from real measurements.

A weathervane and a spinning wind gauge on a rooftop connect by a cord to a pen in the room below. The pen draws marks on a moving roll of paper, tightly bunched where the wind was strong and spread out where it was calm.
The marks bunch where the wind rose. You could read the weather back out of the drawing.
