Lesson

Loudness is measured over a whole programme, the way people hear it. The standards share a method. They part on the number. EBU R 128, the European broadcast recommendation last revised in November 2023, targets -23.0 LUFS with a tolerance of 0.5 LU either way (1.0 for live programmes) and a true-peak ceiling of -1 dBTP. ATSC A/85, revised for American television on 8 July 2026, targets -24 LKFS with a measurement tolerance of about 2 dB and a ceiling of -2 dBTP. For streaming, the EBU's supplement R 128 s2 suggests an interim -20 to -16 LUFS, and ATSC now suggests a single target between -23 and -27 for streaming services.

One film, several loudness targets on a LUFS scale: minus 14 for Spotify's default and most web video, minus 23 for EBU broadcast, minus 24 for US TV; one master, a web version at minus 14 with peaks under minus 1, and a broadcast version.
An ink drawing of five glass tumblers in a row, filled with water to slightly different levels, a spoon resting across the lowest.
The same film, filled to different marks for different platforms.

  1. Question 1, locked

Which of these words means this? “Loudness units relative to full scale. LKFS, the American name, measures the same thing.”

  2. Question 2, locked

Which of these words means this? “One number for a whole programme, with the quietest passages gated out.”
