Depth of field, and the fake bokeh tell

Lesson 4 of 10 in AI photography.

Focusing on Depth of Field and Lens Equivalents · Filmmaker IQ
Can You Spot Fake Bokeh? · Fstoppers
Lesson

Real defocus is continuous. Sharpness falls away gradually with distance, and the falling away is itself information about where things are. Generated images frequently produce a subject that is sharp to its outline and a background that is uniformly soft, which is a mask rather than an optic.

The same garden scene twice. On the left, a woman stands by a row of posts that blur gradually as they get further away. On the right, she looks cut out with a hard edge and every post is equally blurred, even the one right beside her.
Real blur grows with distance. On the right, the near post blurs as much as the far ones.
