Upscaling, and what it invents

Lesson 9 of 12 in AI image making.

How Super Resolution Works · Leo Isikdogan
Lesson

An upscaler does not enlarge your image. It generates a larger one that agrees with it, which means every pixel of new detail is invented. On a hillside at dusk that is a gift. On a label it is a fabrication with your client's name on it.

A small grainy photo of a jar on a windowsill with hills behind. A large magnifier shows the scene bigger and full of new detail in the grass and trees, but the jar's three stripes have become five and its leaf emblem has grown extra leaves.
The hills gained detail, which is fine. The jar gained stripes it never had, which is not.
