ffmpeg can raise a frame rate three ways, and we ran all three on a four-second 24 fps test clip. The fps filter repeats frames, so 48 fps looks exactly like 24. The framerate filter blends neighbours, which on a moving square drew the square twice, each half transparent, and minterpolate estimates motion and draws the in-between frame along it, which put one square in the right place with torn, smeared edges. Speed differs too. The first two took under half a second and minterpolate took 11.4 seconds, returning 189 frames where the others returned 192.
