The words for rights and provenance

Lesson 8 of 9 in The vocabulary.

AI and Copyright: 3 Key Issues · EDUCAUSE
Lesson

This vocabulary appears in contracts now, and a studio that cannot use it accurately will agree to something it does not understand. The important distinction is between what is settled and what is being argued, because a great deal of confident advice treats the second as the first.

An object's chain of ownership, with a gap in the middle that has to be explained.
A contract lies on a desk. On one side, a neat stack of cards is pinned flat by a brass paperweight. On the other, a second stack is blowing about in a breeze from an open window. A person holding a pen pauses over the contract.
Some questions are held down; some are still blowing about. Read the contract knowing which is which.
