Lesson

The industry answer to knowing what is real is provenance rather than detection. Detectors do not work reliably and the research suggests they will not; a signed record attached at creation is a much better-founded idea.

An object's chain of ownership, with a gap in the middle that has to be explained.
A photograph with a ribbon and wax seal tied to its corner is pushed into a brass slot in a wall. In a cutaway of the other side, the photograph comes out without it; the ribbon and seal lie snipped off on the floor.
The seal goes in attached and comes out cut off. Attach it anyway, and keep your own record.
